6.4.4 Antagonism Mechanisms

Several mechanisms have been reported in the biocontrol activity of KYs against fungal soilborne pathogens which include competition for nutrients and space (Janisiewicz et al. 2000), production of cell wall lysis enzymes such as β-1,3-glucanase and chitinase (Urquhart and Punja 2002), mycoparasitism (Wisniewski et al. 1991), and production of antifungal diffusible and volatile metabolites (Masih et al. 2001). Therefore, understanding the antagonism mechanisms of the antagonists among KYs will help in the improvement of their performance resulting from the enhancement of their effectiveness as BCAs and in the development of criteria for rapid screening of superior BCAs.
